Guide to Common Access Numbers

How to avoid extra costs

Since July 2015, calls to freephone numbers starting with 0800 or 0808 have been free to call in the UK from both mobiles and landlines, but what other numbers should you know about if you want to save money on staying connected?

We’ve put together a useful guide of the most commonly used access numbers, so you won’t get caught out by hidden charges.

Non-geographical numbers

These are numbers that don’t start with 01 or 02, and instead have their own pricing arrangements. Numbers beginning with 03 are charged at the same rate as 01 and 02 numbers, and numbers beginning with 080 are free.

However, a single number can make a lot of difference, as those that start 084 and 087 (known as ‘service numbers’) usually cost far more than geographic numbers.

0870, 0871 & 0872 numbers

These numbers still include a capped service charge, but some landlines will include 0870 in their inclusive call plans — it is very rare for it to be included in mobile plans.

0871 and 0872 numbers aren’t generally included in any providers’ allowances, and it’s worth bearing in mind that they have a service charge of 7p/min or more.

This is similarly the case for variants of these codes, including 0879 and similar.

Access Charges

Access charges are set by your provider and are charged per minute while they connect your call.

If your provider doesn’t include 0870 or 0845 numbers, the simplest way to call is to try dialling 034 or 037 in place of 084 or 087, since a number of companies in recent years have replaced their service numbers with the 03 prefix as a standard rate alternative.

If that doesn’t work, however, you can avoid these numbers entirely.

Calling from Overseas

To call overseas from the UK without falling back on typical service numbers, all you need to do is replace the +44 prefix with a 0.

For instance, instead of dialling +4420 XXXX XXXX, you would dial 020 XXXX XXXX. It is an even easier method to use if you use a mobile, as you’re almost guaranteed to avoid the charge.

0345 numbers

These numbers operate as a specific type of phone number charged at a landline-rate, and are often used by businesses, government bodies, and various other public-facing organisations.

These landline phone numbers are not linked with geographic locations, even though the cost to call them is always the same as calling a normal home or business.

If your tariff offers you free calls to landlines, inclusive calls, or bundled minutes, then 0345 numbers will also be included in your price plan at no extra cost to you.

It is also worth noting that all 03 numbers are charged at the same rate, including 03450, 0344, 0330, 03454, 03455, 03456, 03457 and all other numbers that start with the digits 0345, no matter how the number is displayed or what the numbers following it are.
