iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus: Cost, Features and Design
Introduction to iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus
The iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus have landed.
Announced on 12th September, these phones represent a “huge step forwards for the iPhone”, according to Apple CEO, Tim Cook.
And with the new features and design, who can disagree?
If that wasn’t enough for iPhone fans, they were in for a bigger surprise with the announcement of another model: the iPhone X, due for release in November.
iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus Features
Both phones have exciting features and upgrades that make them among the top performers on the market.
Let’s take a look at what’s on offer.
Silver, space grey and new gold finish
Let’s start with the colours: silver, space grey, and a new gold finish. To no surprise, the gold finish is attracting the most attention.
If gold simply doesn’t work for you, then the shiny silver or elegant space grey colours are great alternatives.
The phones both have glass bodies, front and back, which could be a problem for those with butter fingers.
However, Apple has assured its customers this is the most durable glass ever used in a smartphone. We’ll just have to wait and see.
Looks aren’t everything, though. Let’s get down to the technical nature of these phones and the exciting new things they have to offer.
Water and dust resistant
The two models are both IP67 water and dust resistant. This doesn’t mean you can drop the phones in the ocean, but they can survive a pint splashed over them, and a drop in the toilet or swimming pool. It’s not recommended you put this to the test, though.
A11 bionic chip
The new A11 bionic chip processor has been built into both phones. This ensures faster performance and less drag than previous models, which gives hassle-free gaming, 4K video recording, and multi-tab browsing for all users.
All in all, this upgrade makes the two phones among the best on the market.
Both phones come with the latest version of iOS.
This includes many new features, such as a redesigned control centre, phone-to-phone Apple Pay; upgraded messenger, camera and photos; a do-not-disturb-while-driving feature, and a smarter Siri (virtual assistant).
Siri can now be used to take notes, scan QR codes, and translate English, French, German, Chinese and Spanish. Also, Siri will learn how you use apps and what articles you read, and give you recommendations from gathering information.
Augmented reality feature with camera
The new iOS system also features the ARKit (augmented reality).
This lets users view virtual content on real-world settings — perfect for shopaholics and creatives.
How so? Well, creatives can use the platform to develop augmented reality apps and other cool stuff. Shopaholics can use AR to test how suitable online purchases are from shops like IKEA.
For example, you could find your ideal television online and see if it fits in your bedroom, living room or wherever you wish to put it.
New stereo speakers
Music and video lovers can now enjoy speakers 25% louder than the iPhone 7. Blast the volume away and lose yourself in your favourite track or your favourite show like never before.
Touch ID functionality
Touch ID makes a welcome return on both models.
Both phones also have wireless charging capabilities. Perfect for the 2017 market, where wireless technology is certainly leading the way for the future.
However, as with all wireless charging phones, you still need to plug in a power pad to allow inductive charging. Let’s hope that, one day, someone will get rid of the power cords altogether.
12MP camera with 4K 60fps video
We all have a friend who records everything, if not ourselves. For those who do, the iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus have a new video encoder with faster video frame rates and real-time image and motion analysis.
This makes video on the iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus much better than any video technology ever seen on a mobile phone.
Both models support glorious 4K video resolution at 60 frames per second and incredible 1080p slow motion video.
Differences Between the iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus
Naturally, these phones have a few differences. If they didn’t, what would be the point in two models? So let’s compare them.
Smaller and lighter vs. Bigger and heavier
The iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus vary in size and weight. Take a look below:
- 4.7” display
- 138.4 x 67.3 x 7.3mm
- Weighs 148g.
iPhone 8 Plus:
- 5.5” display
- 158.4 x 78.1 x 7.5mm
- Weighs 202g.
F/1.8 wide-angle lens camera vs. Dual-camera setup
An upgraded 12MP, f/1.8 wide-angle lens camera features in both phones. This camera has sharper detail and sensors that let in 83% more light than the previous model.
The iPhone 8 Plus offers an incredible dual-camera setup that includes an f/2.8 telephoto lens and the upgraded f/1.8 wide-angle lens. Two cameras in one!
By comparison, the f/2.8 telephoto lens offers even sharper detail, background blurring, and improved performance in low-light areas.
The dual-camera setup also includes a new Portrait Lighting effect. This lets users apply studio-quality lighting effects to images. If you’re a photographer-in-training or enjoy playing with filters, this is an ideal feature to create professional and elegant pictures.
iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus Cost
How much are the new iPhones? While both iPhones come with the same amount of storage, they each vary in cost.
Take a deep breath before you read on.
The iPhone 8 costs £699 (64GB) and £849 (256GB).
The iPhone 8 Plus costs £799 (64GB) and £949 (256GB).
Paying £100 extra for the iPhone 8 Plus may not seem worth it to some. But it depends on what you want to use your phone for and what you think is the better investment. A bigger screen, overall phone size, and a dual-camera setup might be worth the extra cost for some.
The average user might get more for their money from the iPhone 8, as they may not need the extra features.
iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus Reviews
What do the critics say? Well, reception of the iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus has been fairly mixed.
Most reviewers agree the phones are a decent upgrade, and say the wireless charging feature, camera improvements, and faster processor are great additions.
However, critics have slammed the glass bodies and the fact the phones pale by comparison to the design and features of the iPhone X, released in November.
But which of the two should you buy?
Well, that depends on if you put cost above features.
The iPhone 8 is arguably the phone you want if you value cost over features. It’s still advanced and a top performer in the market, even without the added features of the iPhone 8 Plus.
Those who want all new features, no matter how subtle they are, will be far happier with the iPhone 8 Plus. The dual-camera setup, Portrait Lighting feature, and size increase will seem like a worthy investment.
